Questions and answers

How old do I have to be?

In most countries you must be 18 to get a tattoo without a parent, and in some places not even with one. In Germany tattooing minors needs the parents’ consent and many studios refuse it altogether. Studios decide for themselves and must follow the law of their country.

What should I think about before my first tattoo?

Take your time. Collect ideas, think about meaning and placement, check how it looks on your body (Tatspire’s body studio helps), consider your job and how you will feel about it in ten years. A good idea survives a few weeks of waiting.

Is a tattoo really permanent?

Practically yes. The ink sits in the deeper layers of the skin and stays for life, though it softens and fades with time and sun. Removal by laser is possible but long, costly and not always complete.

How much does a tattoo cost?

It depends on size, detail, placement, colour and the artist’s hourly rate. Most studios have a minimum price. Tatspire’s price estimate in the request form gives a rough range; the studio confirms the final price after seeing your idea.

How long does a session take?

A small simple tattoo can take under an hour; a hand-sized piece a few hours; large pieces are split into several sessions of three to six hours, with weeks in between so the skin can heal.

Do I tip my tattoo artist?

Tipping is appreciated but not required. Ten to twenty percent is common in many countries, and a good review helps the artist more than anything.

How do I prepare for my appointment?

Sleep well, eat a proper meal, drink water, skip alcohol the day before and on the day, avoid blood thinners such as aspirin unless a doctor says otherwise, wear loose clothes that leave the skin free, and bring ID. Sign the consent form in Tatspire beforehand if your studio uses it.

Do I have to shave the area?

The artist usually shaves it for a clean result. If you do it yourself, do it the day before and do not irritate the skin. Do not use hair-removal creams.

Can I get a tattoo on sunburnt or tanned skin?

No. Sunburnt, peeling or irritated skin cannot be tattooed well. Stay out of the sun for a couple of weeks before and avoid a fresh tan on the area.

Can I bring a friend?

Many studios allow one person for support, some do not because of space and hygiene. Ask when you book.

What if I feel ill on the day?

Tell the studio and move the appointment. Getting a tattoo with a cold, fever or infection is unsafe for you and harder on your body. Use “Move appointment” or write to the studio in the chat.
